Primary Use & Mechanism
Metformin is primarily a prescription drug for Type 2 diabetes. It works by lowering glucose production in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity, which helps the body use insulin more effectively.
Benefits and Uses
1. Weight Loss (General)
Metformin can support modest weight loss(typically 5-10 lbs) in individuals with insulin resistance or pre-diabetes. Its effects are indirect:
· Reduces Appetite: It can slightly suppress hunger.
· Decreases Fat Storage: By improving insulin sensitivity, it tells the body to store less fat.
· Lowers Blood Sugar: Prevents excess sugar from being stored as fat.
2. Bodybuilding
Bodybuilders use metformin”off-label” primarily during the cutting phase to achieve extreme leanness. The reasons are specific:
· Counteracts “Spillover”: During a cut, high-carb “refeed” days are used to boost metabolism. Metformin is believed to help shuttle these carbs into muscles for glycogen instead of being stored as fat.
· Improves Insulin Sensitivity: This makes the body more efficient at using nutrients, which is crucial when calories are low.
· Reduces Fat Gain During Bulks: Some use it in a controlled way during a bulk to minimize fat gain while building muscle, though this is a delicate balance.
The core reason bodybuilders use it is partitioning—trying to direct nutrients (carbs) toward muscles and away from fat cells.
