Primary Use & Mechanism
Nebivolol is a prescription beta-blocker used primarily to treat high blood pressure. Its key mechanism is selectively blocking beta-1 receptors in the heart, which slows the heart rate and reduces blood pressure. It also promotes nitric oxide release, which helps dilate blood vessels.
Bodybuilders and athletes may use Nebivolol “off-label” for two main reasons:
1. Performance Anxiety: To control “stage fright” or physical shaking before a competition or photo shoot by blunting the physical effects of adrenaline (like a high heart rate and tremors).
2. Counteracting Steroid Side Effects: To manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and elevated heart rate that are common side effects of anabolic steroid and performance-enhancing drug (PED) cycles.
Why Nebivolol is Preferred Over Other Beta-Blockers
· Fewer Side Effects: It is less likely to cause fatigue, sexual dysfunction, or negatively impact lipid profiles compared to older beta-blockers.
· Nitric Oxide Boost: The vasodilation can enhance blood flow and potentially improve the “pump” during workouts, which is a desirable effect for athletes.
